Roker Canoe Club run Go Canoeing Starter Sessions every Tuesday evening. From April to September these are held at Hetton Lyons Country Park. From October to March sessions are held at Farringdon Pool in Sunderland.
Starter Sessions are an excellent introduction to canoeing. They are open to everyone, from eight years old to eighty years young! You don’t need any previous canoeing experience, specialist kit or skills… just turn up andhave a go!
If you've been canoeing before, Starter Sessions are also a great opportunity to find out what your Roker Canoe Club has to offer. Perhaps it's been a while since you were last out on the water, or maybe you want to share your passion and introduce family and friends to the sport.
Whatever your motivation, Starter Sessions provide an ideal opportunity to get out on the water and get paddling.
Sessions are for paddlers of all levels. Beginners are most welcome to attend. Please note that participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Roker Canoe Club welcomes all paddlers regardless of sex, age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or other beliefs. We will do our best to help anybody enjoy paddlesport. Persons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must remain present at all times during a session. For insurance purposes that person must sign in to the session and has the option of whether to join in or not.
Please understand that initially our equipment base is limited and we can only do what we can do.
Sessions are held every Tuesday at 6:00pm (subject to weather conditions). Starter Sessions last about an hour and a half. If you can't make it for 6:00pm just let us know and we can make arrangements to suit.
There is currently no need to book, but this will be reviewed subject to demand. If you have any questions or have any special requirements it is advisable to let us know beforehand via the Contact page.
What Do I Need?
For your first session you will need to bring:
T-shirt (not cotton)
Fleece (for under cag in colder weather)
Old pair of trainers or similar
Drink, snack etc. for after the activity
Medication: if you are on medication e.g. inhalers etc., you must bring them along.
If you have any of your own kit, feel free to bring it along. Coaches will check to make sure it is suitable
Sessions cost £5 for non-members and £4 for members including all kit. If you provide all your own kit there is a reduced fee.
From April to September we will be paddling on the lake at Hetton Lyons Country Park. This is a pleasant, sheltered spot and is a great place for an introduction to paddlesport. There is no worry about tides, swell or off-shore winds and the water is nice and clean - we reckon this is one of the best places in the North East for beginners. The Club is grateful to Springboard Adventure for their assistance. Meet in the carpark next to the centre buildings. NB - Please check our map for the exact location - if you rely on postcode and satnav it will take you to the wrong place!
Unfortunately we do not have access to changing facilities.
